Custom Orthotics
-
Orthotics are special inserts that go into your shoe to correct structural foot problems such as flat arches and foot and leg pain. Custom orthotics are also specifically made to fit the unique shape of your feet to provide cushioning, comfort, and support.
Over-the-counter orthotics are generally a one-size-fits-all product. Custom prescription orthotics are specially created to the unique structure of your feet. They are designed to match the precise way that you move, cushioning, and supporting with each step. Orthotics are made after a podiatrist has conducted a complete evaluation of your feet, ankles, and legs so that the orthotic can accommodate your unique foot structure and pathology.
At Texas Family Foot and Ankle Care, we utilize 3D scanning to recreate an exact dynamic mold of the lower extremities. The result is a high-quality, sleek, and functional device that provides adequate support without compromising on style.
Prescription orthotics are divided into two categories:
Functional – These are created of a semi-rigid material like plastic or graphite. Functional orthotics are designed to control foot pain caused by abnormal motion. They can also be used to treat injuries such as shin splints or tendinitis.
Accommodative – this orthotic is softer and designed to provide additional cushioning and support. They can be used to treat diabetic foot ulcers, painful calluses on the bottom of the foot, and other conditions that cause discomfort like plantar fasciitis.
Ankle Foot Braces
-
An Ankle Foot Orthosis or AFO device may be necessary for certain conditions. An AFO is a custom-made device that provides stability and support to the foot and ankle. An AFO supports and strengthens weakened tendons and ligaments in the foot and misaligned joints such as the subtalar and ankle joints. An AFO can be used in nonsurgical candidates to provide comfort and stability.
AFOs are used to treat many conditions that cause tendon and ligament weakness, such as congenital neuromuscular disorders including Multiple Sclerosis, acquired conditions like PTTD (Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction), ankle instability, and Drop Foot.
At Texas Family Foot and Ankle Care, we utilize 3D scanning to recreate an exact dynamic mold of the lower extremities. For specific cases, cast molding may be utilized to create your custom AFO.
Ultrasound Guided Injections
-
An injection can be a therapeutic and diagnostic treatment option for a variety of foot and ankle conditions. A medicated cortisone injection may be indicated to reduce inflammation and provide relief to painful joints and soft tissue.
Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time and dynamic images of the foot and ankle structures. Ultrasound-guided injections allow the physician to visualize the needle in real-time and allow them to avoid any unwanted complications. Through ultrasound guidance, the accuracy of the injections are improved in the targeted areas.
Kinesiology Taping
-
Kinesiology tape or KT could be applied for different purposes, such as easing up the motion of a muscle or tendon, inhibiting the motion of a muscle or tendon, decompressing joints, or simply applying compression to an affected area. When the body is injured through impact or over-use, lymphatic fluid accumulates causing inflammation and increased pressure on muscles and tissues leading to significant discomfort or pain.
When KT take is applied properly, the elasticity in the KT tape gently lifts the skin, decompressing the layers of the soft tissue below. This gentle lifting of the skin creates space that enables movement of blood and lymphatic fluid which ultimately alleviates pressure and swelling.
